Importing Vechicles into Canada

New Vehicles:

  1. Transport Canada regulates vehicles safety
  2. New vehicles must meet Canadian Standards & have safety mark (Passenger Door)

Used Vehicles:

  1. Importation depends on country of manufacture, model, and Age of vehicle
  2. Over 15 years old vehicles exempt from Registrar of Vehicles (RIV)
  3. If exempt from RIV must still meet Provincial Safety Requirements

RIV Process:

  1. The original certificate of title for your vehicle must be submitted to U.S. Customs at least 72 hours before the vehicle is exported from the United States
  2. The vehicle must be presented to U.S. Customs at the time of exportation.
  3. Must have proof of Ownership & prior registration
  4. Fill out Vehicle Import Form cost is $182.00 (Form # 13-0132)
  5. Customs will check model list to make sure it’s acceptable to be imported
  6. RIV will give importer notice of what needs to be done to car before it can be licensed in Canada
  7. Car must  be safeted in Canada
  8. Client pays applicable Duties & Taxes

Wrecks, Scrap Vehicles:

Customs needs to ensure Vehicle is not Salvageable
